Metrology is the science of measurement. The measurement pitfalls, mistakes people often make, limitations of equipment, and how to work around those limitations will be focused upon. The reflection and transmission terminology and measurement methods will be reviewed. A knowledge of photometry and colorimetry is required.

OLED technology has made notable progress as THE display of Choice for large-sized TVs as well as for small- and medium-sized mobile devices. OLEDs are now being extended to new applications such as flexible, transparent, and mirror displays. This seminar will review the current status and address the key technical issues of OLED TVs and flexible OLEDs. New applications and new productivity innovation using R2R manufacturing technology for low-cost OLED lighting will also be presented.

M-5: Micro-LED Displays Based on Gallium Nitride for Ultra-Energy-Efficient Displays

GaN-based semiconductor materials have been used to fabricate LEDs that have lead to the realization of high-efficiency LED backlights for TV and mobile displays. By using advanced light-extraction structures, advanced GaN blue and green LEDs devices that exhibit external quantum efficencies higher than 70%, and 42%, respectively, have been fabricated. Fundamental physics of GaN emitters and the promise of direct-view Micro-LED-based Red-Green-Blue LEDs for flexible and transparent displays will be discussed.

The role of optical films has rapidly increased in recent days and have been used as a very important element of LCDs and OLEDs for TV, mobile-phone, and touch-panel applications. Quantum dots have been long thought to play a central role in displays, given their tunable and narrow emission, either photo- or electro-excitaiton, and solution processibility. This dream is finally coming into play, becoming reality as down-conversion phosphors in backlighting units and near-reality as a new type of LED.

With recent advances in 3D sensing and immersive displays, a new class of augmented- and virtual-reality (AR/VR) devices are blurring the border between the real and virtual worlds. This seminar will present the system-level requirements of AR/VR devices from fundamental human-factor considerations and review advances in sensing, computing, and display technologies, as well as end-to-end system architecture for seamless immersive and interactive experiences, including demonstrations of state-of-the-art applications.

This seminar describes the most important aspects of color rendering on displays such as electro-optical transfer function, luminance, dynamic range (including HDR), contrast (static/dynamic), gray tracking, channel crosstalk, white point, color gamut and primaries, and response time. The seminar shows how to effectively apply these factors in display color management for maximizing the displayed color quality.
