Shaping the Future with Information Displays Jinoh Kwag

In hyper-connected environments, information displays need to keep evolving to meet the demands from new kinds of usage. Real-time streaming and personalized services with the advancements of ICT infrastructures have compelled information consumers to spend more time using various forms of mobile devices. Also, the demand for large-scale displays continues to increase as consumers increasingly enjoy the feeling of immersion. This presentation will share our vision on how the display industry needs to adapt to the rapidly changing digital industry landscape.

Jinoh Kwag is executive vice president and the head of the Display Research Center at Samsung Display. He received his Ph.D. in solid state physics from Seoul National University in Korea. For the last 30 years, he has made valuable contributions to materializing new LCD and OLED technologies with his outstanding leadership and rich experience in the field. Starting his career at Samsung SDI in 1987, he was a key player in developing STN-LCD technology. He later transferred to Samsung Electronics, where he successfully led project teams working on commercializing a series of TFT-LCD mobile and monitor products. During his time at Samsung, Dr. Kwag managed the development of slim AMOLED displays with integrated touch sensors (Super AMOLEDs) and flexible-edge AMOLEDs (Y-OCTA) for the Galaxy S series. Kwag’s significant achievements set new technological trends in the display industry, contributing greatly to Samsung’s sustainable success.

There are over 3 billion internet users in the world, with more than half of them accessing the internet from their mobile devices. Smartphones, laptop computers, and many other types of connected products at home and on the go are becoming pervasive. Some of the most profound technology breakthroughs are happening at the intersection of hardware, software, and artificial intelligence (AI). Google believes there are significant opportunities to radically help people improve their everyday lives by taking an end-to-end approach to consumer technology that merges the industry’s most innovative AI with intuitive software, powerful hardware, and amazing displays.

Rick Osterloh joined Google in April 2016 as the senior vice president overseeing Google’s hardware efforts—including products such as Pixel phones, the Google Home family of smart speakers, Google Wifi, and more—that bring together the best of Google’s AI, software, and hardware. Over the last 20+ years, Mr. Osterloh has had a successful track record in the consumer hardware and technology industry. Most recently, he was the president of Motorola Mobility. Prior to becoming president in April 2014, he was SVP of product at Motorola, responsible for the planning, strategy and delivery of all products. He served as VP of product and design at Skype, led the delivery of software and operation of the Android platform at Motorola, and oversaw product management at Good Technology. Osterloh has also held consulting and product management positions at Deloitte & Touche, Amazon.com, and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. He received a bachelor's and master’s degree in industrial engineering, as well as an MBA from Stanford University. He is a staunch Golden State Warriors supporter and enjoys playing basketball in his spare time. Osterloh also serves on the Board of the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), which aims to develop better athletes and better people through resources for youth and high school sports coaches, parents, administrators, and student-athletes.

Since joining BOE in 2003, Dr. Gao has also successfully held the important posts of chief of production development and general manager of BOEOT, BOE Chongqing, totaling over 10 years of experience in the display industry.

The challenge behind designing a unique automotive experience is delivering mobility solutions that create a “seamless” User eXperience (UX). As the world moves toward the next generation of autonomous vehicles, the meaning of a seamless UX becomes increasingly complex. In this presentation, renowned industrial designer and innovator Saran Diakité Kaba will outline and discuss the various meanings of the “seamless” User eXperience being developed for PSA Groupe to meet and exceed customer expectations, including seamless mobility, seamless team, seamless skills, seamless vision, seamless dimensions, seamless modes, and more!

Saran Diakité Kaba, Vice President, R&D and Global Design at PSA Groupe, is currently working on next-generation Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel, and other vehicle makes. She is an industrial designer and a teacher specializing in interaction/interface design, global User eXperience (UX), and agile development methods. After receiving her master’s degree from the ENSCI Les Ateliers (the national French school of industrial design), she worked in France and around the world as a specialist in user-centered design. Her work has included projects for EDF Orange, Fagorbrandt, Alcatel Lucent, Dassault Systems, Eiffage, Bouygues, Decathlon and, since 2011, PSA Groupe. As an innovator who drives change, Saran tackled new challenges working with industrial, interior, and architectural design firms including Plan Creatif (Babel), Absolute Design (BETC Design), 3e-Oeil Studio (Dassault Systèmes Design Studio), and PSA Groupe, which introduced her to the world of innovation strategy as seen through the lens of user experience. Her projects — spanning from automotive design to museum experience — are noted for their unusual and innovative vision of a better-designed future with magical interactions. Examples include developing a plan for sustainable living in France’s biggest towns by 2030; creating interactive ways for young people to learn about trades; re-imagining television and radio; and leading HMI/usage for the next generation of smart and autonomous cars, which will exist in public space in an entirely new way compared to today’s cars.
